After introductions and a health and safety talk day 1 was underway! Canoeing and kayaking were first with the the less able service users paired with the more able. Once everyone had the hang of their boat the organisers set a few games to improve confidence. The teams started off collecting balls to see who could get the highest number. This brought out the competitive streak in a number of people! This was followed by raft ‘tig’ and then chasing the instructor’s canoe, followed by raft polo and then the session ended with a race from one end of the lake to the other! All got really involved with the activities, even those who struggled initially! Fortunately, everyone stayed in their boat, however everyone managed to get wet in some way! After a BBQ lunch it was Bushcraft skills! Most of the group didn’t know what this was, so it was good to hear the instructors explain what they were about to do. The group started by looking at how to use dock leaves properly, which was by crushing them by hand and squeezing out the juice. We next set off to see what we could forage from the plant life to help us build a fire. Thankfully all groups managed to light a fire, some with a little extra help.
